How do I know what fins fit my surfboard?

Choosing the right surfboard fins depends on several key factors and their construction, including your board’s fin setup, the fin system, and your surfing style. First, check your board's fin setup; common setups include a single fin(which is mostly used for a longboard), twin fin, thruster (three fins), and quad (four fins), with each providing different performance characteristics. For example, a thruster setup offers stability and drive, while a twin setup is ideal for speed and manoeuvrability.

Next, consider the fin system used on your board, such as FCS fins or Futures; fins are generally not interchangeable between systems, so make sure you choose fins compatible with your board's fin box.

Should I get FCS or Futures?

Choosing between FCS and Futures fins often comes down to compatibility, personal preference, and the style of surfing you’re aiming for. Fin designs have been inspired by surfers over generations and helped the development of the surfboard fins we see today.

FCS

FCS surfboard fins (Fin Control Systems) are known for their dual-tab design and quick, tool-free interchangeability, which allows surfers to swap fins in and out with ease. This can be a big advantage if you frequently travel or surf in varied conditions, as you can adapt your fins quickly to suit different waves. There are two options to consider when purchasing these fins:

  1. FCS 1 fins - A popular and versatile fin system designed for performance-oriented surfing. Known for their reliable and secure fit, FCS 1 fins use a pin-based attachment system that allows for easy installation and removal. These fins offer excellent stability, control, and responsiveness, making them ideal for surfers looking to enhance their maneuverability and speed on a variety of wave types.

  2. FCS 2 fins - A modern and advanced fin system that is designed for quick and easy installation without the need for screws or tools. The FCS 2 system features a secure, click-in design that allows surfers to swap fins effortlessly, offering greater convenience and flexibility. Known for being light and having precision, these fins provide excellent drive, control, and responsiveness, enhancing overall performance. FCS 2 fins are favoured by surfers looking for reliable, high-performance fins that can handle everything from small beach breaks to powerful reef waves.

Futures

Futures, on the other hand, have been engineered to use a single-tab design that’s installed with a fin key and a screw at the front, creating a strong, stable base that many surfers believe improves durability and overall drive in powerful waves.

Ultimately, both FCS and Futures shapers offer high-quality fins; the choice may come down to which fin system feels more secure and which design better suits your board and way of surfing. At Sorted Surf Shop we have an extensive range of both types of fin setup ups from longboard, twin fin and performance our options are endless!

What do fins do for a surfboard?

Fins are essential to a surfboard's performance, providing stability, drive, and manoeuvrability on the wave. Acting like a rudder, fins create resistance against the water, allowing surfers to steer the board with precision. Without fins, a surfboard would slide unpredictably, making it difficult to control and nearly impossible to perform turns or maintain speed on a wave. T

Is it harder to surf without fins?

Surfing without fins can be significantly more challenging due to the loss of stability, control, and manoeuvrability that fins provide. Fins act as stabilizers on the board, helping to track straight and reduce unwanted slipping or sliding.

However, some surfers may enjoy the challenge and freedom of riding finless, often opting for a more traditional or minimalist approach. You can check out our range of foam surfboards that can be ridden and enjoyed finless if you are up for a challenge!
