Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need to wear a wetsuit?
Surfers rely on wetsuits to give them the freedom to surf during the winter months. When changing seasons bring cold waters to popular surf spots, the tourists may disperse, but the locals jump in with the warmth and protection of wetsuits.
Our wetsuit selection includes a huge range of thicknesses and materials to keep people safe in different water temperatures. We also offer other essential wetsuit items, including wetsuit boots, gloves, hoods, and other accessories.
Why do I need a summer women's wetsuit?
While winter wetsuits cover the entire body, you may opt for a sleeveless wetsuit, a shortie, or a thinner suit during the warmer seasons. You may be tempted to surf without a wetsuit during the summer, but wetsuits provide many benefits besides warmth in colder water. They also protect your skin from the sun, waves, and wind.
At a minimum, we recommend surfing with a rash guard to keep your skin protected in warmer temperatures. Our selection of women's wetsuits includes options for every season, including winter suits, summer suits, shorties, and accessories. We stock durable, well-constructed women's wetsuits designed for maximum comfort from leading surf brands like O'Neill, Rip Curl, and C Skins.
How is a wetsuit different from a rash guard?
Although sleeveless, short-legged, and two-piece wetsuits exist, the easiest way to understand the difference between a wetsuit and a rash guard is this: A wetsuit covers the whole body, while a rash guard covers the torso and arms, leaving the legs exposed.
A rash guard, also called a rash vest or surf shirt, provides skin protection and may be worn beneath a wetsuit. However, it won't provide warmth like a wetsuit will because that is not its purpose. Surfers who live in or visit locations with particularly warm water may opt to wear a rash guard instead of a wetsuit.
How do I choose the perfect women's wetsuit for me?
To choose the perfect womens wetsuit, you must consider the water temperature where you'll be, your comfort level, and your mobility.
A thin wetsuit may not provide enough insulation to keep you warm in freezing waters. On the other hand, a thicker neoprene wetsuit may be too constricting for a beginner who still struggles with feeling comfortable moving in the water. Your perfect fit should provide enough thickness to keep you warm without adversely limiting your flexibility and mobility.
Our Sorted Surf Shop team can help you choose your ideal wetsuit, whether you're a beginner or a pro. Our experts can guide you to the best purchase based on your skill level, location, and style preferences so that you end up with a properly-fitted wetsuit perfect for your needs.
What is a shortie wetsuit?
A shortie describes a wetsuit that doesn't reach all the way down the legs. Put most simply, it has shorts instead of pants, with the material stopping about mid-thigh or just above the knee.
Many surf enthusiasts opt to wear shorties instead of full suits to strike a balance between warmth and mobility during the warm season. The top of the suit may or may not cover the arms but always covers the core of the body to keep the surfer warm.
How do I change out of my wetsuit in public?
One of the trickiest aspects of wearing a wetsuit is changing in and out of it discreetly. The beach may not provide a discreet area to change, so many beachgoers invest in changing robes. Men and ladies alike use towelling or weatherproof robes to change in and out of their surf gear without worry.
At Sorted Surf Shop, we stock changing robes in a variety of sizes for every member of the family. You may opt for a soft towelling robe or a waterproof robe, depending on where you live and surf. For example, you may choose a waterproof robe if you often encounter rain while surfing.
