If you are thinking of starting to surf then it is really important to find the correct board for your size and weight. You have a few options in terms of what board to buy in terms of soft surfboard or a hard top board. A soft board is for someone that wants to learn the basics of surfing and catch loads of waves. The only down side to a soft board is that you are restricted in terms of progression as they are designed to catch waves and go along the line.
